Rock 'n' Roll

Read the text and answer the questions that follow.
Rock ’n’ Roll
So you want to be a rock ’n’ roll star? Until recently, there was not much studying you could do to fulfill this ambition. Rock stars of the past relied on raw talent, hard work and a lot of luck; even the members of the Beatles had no formal education in music.
But now, throughout the United States, the United Kingdom and elsewhere, aspiring young musicians can attend rock ’n’ roll schools. Most are designed for the 8 to 18 age group, and offer lessons on playing guitar, drums and keyboard instruments, as well as singing. Classes are sometimes also given on rock history, musical composition and song-writing.
Some programmes train students in performance-related skills such as sound and lighting and stage presence: how to develop self-confidence and deal with stage fright. Students may also find out about group dynamics and what to do with group members whose egos get too big. Sometimes students also learn about logo and brand names, and may pass out autographed photos of themselves to “fans” after a performance.
For those who cannot find a local programme, summer camps devoted to rock music are also available. Here, counsellors accompany students to lessons, rehearsals and jam sessions, as well as to music shops and recording studios. Participants may also attend performances in local bars, and meetings are arranged with famous local musicians. From them, campers find out not only about technique, but also about the realities of life in the music business, and how to make it a career.
However, not everyone wants hands-on instruction. People who prefer a more academic approach can choose from classes available in various locales on rock ’n’ roll related subjects. Even people with no musical talent may enjoy learning about the evolution of the genre, girl groups or the rise of Motown, for example.
So whether your interest in music is theoretical or practical, there is now somewhere for you to study. Who knows where the next rock and roll sensation may be learning right now?

    WRITING
Rock and roll is a genre of popular music which was born in the United States in the late 40s although it is still nowadays with great vigour. It arised from the combination of many African-American genres such as blues, jump blues, jazz, gospel music, western swing and country music.

The expression ‘’Rock and Roll’’ comes from an evolution from both words. They were used during the 20th century with many connotations until they merged together in the 40s forming a double entendre, usually referring to very suggestive or scandalous dancing as simply having sex.

Rock and roll genre has constantly envolved at the same time as the society and world did. This lead to suppose that it’s essence has experimented many changes. We could understand this evolution by listening to rock and roll groups from different decades like The Beattles, which go back to the 60s, or a contemporary one like Red Hot Chilly Peppers which could be considered as a mix of genres, not what we used to call rock and roll.

Rock 'n' roll is a music genre which was born in the United States by the end of the 1940s. It comes from a combination of some African genres, such as blues or jazz, mixed with gospel music, western swing and country.

The name "rock 'n' roll" was originally used to describe the movement of a ship, but then, by the early twentieth century, it began to be used both to describe the spiritual fervour of black chruch rituals and as a sexual analogy.

This genre has suffered a lot of changes during history and we can see that through the music. There is a huge difference between Elvis Presley or Carl Perkins, which are famous rock 'n' roll singers from the 60s, and groups like AC/DC or Red Hot Chilly Peppers, who are a mix of genres, not what was considered rock 'n' roll some decades ago.

Rock 'n' roll is a genre of music whose begginings can be found in the United States during the late 40s and the early 50s, as a result of a combination between genres from blues, jump blues and gospel to Westwern swing and country.
The word 'roll' has been used since at least the 17th century as a term meaning 'shake or disturb'. A couple hundred years later, the definition had changed to refer being shaken in a spiritual sense. The word 'roll', however, meant having sex.
But in the 1922, the definition of the term 'roll' was something to the effect of 'to cause to move with musical rhythm''. At the same time, these two terms had naturally emerged together, forming a double meaning refering to very suggestive or scandalous dancing as well as simply having sex (depending on how you looked at it).
A pair of examples of early rock and roll singers are Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, but nowadays there are a lot of modern singers of rock and roll such as Greenday, Artic Monkeys, Nirvana or Paramore.

    Writing.
Rock and roll is a genre of music which was born in the USA in the 60s because of the need to create a new song more stimulating. The name is a kind of trick, it has a lot of meanings. Rock means how hard was the sound, and roll means to have sex which represents the liberal spirit of this music. However, rock and roll is also refered to the way you move while dancing those songs, rock means moving side to side and roll means go round.
Rock’n’roll, as known as “rock” has suffered a lot of changes and mixes with other styles such as punk, pop, and even metal. Even though it started with a hard sound, it made you want to move. One of the most representative rock singer ever has always been Elvis Presley.
However, how I have already said, rock has mixed with other genres and the result is very satisfactorial. It's very difficult to find true pure rock artists though we have The Rolling Stones I am a very big fan of all genres of rock, thus I know some really cool bands. In pop rock we have Green Day, which is truly rock-ish or some pop-ish bands such as Fall Out Boy and All Time Low. The most recent band, 5 Seconds of Summer is also kind of pop-rock though they have touches of punk-rock. That’s because of their influences, between which we found some amazing bands such as Green Day or Blink-182. Others as Bowling for Soup and Sum 41 are also punk-rock. Punk-rock; rock in general, has settled a base down for post—hardcore music which is a bit different but also very pleasant to listen to. If you wonder, you can listen to some bands such as Pierce the Veil or Sleeping with Sirens.

    WRITING

The history of “rock and roll”, as the cultural phenomenon, is very difficult to specify, some would even say that is “impossible”, because there isn’t a day or even a year which marks the beginning of the rock. So, we could say that it appeared or it became popular between the 1940s and the 1950s. It was originated and developed in the United States.

However, what we call “rock” has evolved from many different sources, in many different regions and at many different moments in the twentieth century. Rock ‘n’ roll has been formed by the combination of African and American genres such as blues, jazz or gospel music, together with Western swing and country music. Originally, the phrase “rocking and rolling” described the movement of a ship on the ocean, but at the same time that rock music was popularizing, this expression became more and more frequent.

In fact, this genre of music, initially, was aimed at a black audience. The first rock and roll record was in January in 1951, and the first rock and roll concert in 1952. Some popular rock and roll singers of the time, such as Fats Domino and Little Richard, came out of the black rhythm and blues tradition, making the music attractive to white audiences too. Many other examples of early rock ‘n’ roll singers who were white singers and played and recorded in the mid – 1950s were Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis. Actually, former popular rock and roll bands like, for instance, The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, didn’t arrive to America until the 1960s. Some examples of recent past rock and roll singers and bands were Prince (his first big success was in 1982 with his album “1999”) or Nirvana (1987).

Anyway, no matter how it has developed or transformed, rock ‘n’ roll continues being the same youthful, rebellious and spontaneous that it was half a century ago.
